California Wildfires are Inevitable
Protect what matters now so you’re ready when disaster strikes. We’ll help keep your property safe, compliant, and looking good.
Know the Law
Does your property meet the new 100 ft defensible space requirements?
By January 1, 2023, the law will require 100 ft of defensible space, including Zones 0, 1, & 2 that mandate stricter fuel restrictions closer to structures. 100ft of defensible space starts at the home and extends 100 ft in all directions or to the property line, whichever is closer. As these regulations adapt and change, we’re here to help you remain in compliance and keep you home safe from the catastrophe of wildfire.
-
While outside of the scope of the law for defensible space until Jan 1, 2023, Cal Fire defines the ember-resistant zone as:
“5 feet from buildings, structures, [around and under] decks, etc… and requires the most stringent wildfire fuel reduction. The ember-resistant zone is designed to keep fire or embers from igniting materials that can spread the fire to your home.”
The ember resistant zone has proven to be one of the most critical in preventing homes from being destroyed by wildfire. If you’re unsure of your home or structure’s safety, give us a call and we can help you come up with a plan to protect yourself!
-
Zone 1 extends 30 feet from buildings, structures, decks, etc. or to your property line, whichever is closer.
Remove all dead plants, grass and weeds (vegetation).
Remove dead or dry leaves and pine needles from your yard, roof and rain gutters.
Remove branches that hang over your roof and keep dead branches 10 feet away from your chimney.
Trim trees regularly to keep branches a minimum of 10 feet from other trees.
Relocate wood piles to Zone 2.
Remove or prune flammable plants and shrubs near windows.
Remove vegetation and items that could catch fire from around and under decks, balconies and stairs.
Create a separation between trees, shrubs and items that could catch fire, such as patio furniture, wood piles, swing sets, etc.
For more information on zones, see Cal Fire’s website.
-
Zone 2 extends from 30 feet to 100 feet out from buildings, structures, decks, etc. or to your property line, whichever is closer.
Cut or mow annual grass down to a maximum height of 4 inches.
Create horizontal space between shrubs and trees.
Create vertical space between grass, shrubs and trees.
Remove fallen leaves, needles, twigs, bark, cones, and small branches. However, they may be permitted to a depth of 3 inches.
All exposed wood piles must have a minimum of 10 feet of clearance, down to bare mineral soil, in all directions.
For more information on zones, see Cal Fire’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
We provide full-service tree care, including tree trimming, pruning, and removal for trees of all sizes. Our services include hazardous and storm-damaged tree removal, crane-assisted removals, structural pruning, canopy thinning, deadwood removal, and specialized work such as tight-access and utility clearance pruning.
-
Crane-assisted tree removal is used for large, hazardous, or hard-to-reach trees where traditional removal methods are not safe or practical. Cranes allow us to safely lift and remove heavy sections with precision, minimizing risk to nearby structures, landscaping, and surrounding property.
-
Fire-smart landscaping reduces the risk of wildfire damage by limiting fuel sources and slowing fire spread around your home. A fire-safe yard is well maintained and thoughtfully planned using low-growth, fire- and drought-resistant plants, proper spacing, and regular debris removal. Key practices include removing lower tree branches at least 6 feet from the ground, spacing shrubs and trees to prevent fire ladders, and clearing flammable material near plant bases. For additional guidance, homeowners can reference Cal Fire’s defensible space recommendations.
Avoid fire ladder opportunities
Low-growth, fire-safe plants near structures
Remove tree branches 6' from ground
Shrubs 3x height from tree branches
Use fire and drought-resistant plants
Keep 2x height between shrubs
Allow 10' between larger trees
Remove fuel sources near plant bases
-
Neglected landscaping such as dead trees, overgrown brush, and poor maintenance increases wildfire risk and can negatively impact the safety and appearance of your property. Creating and maintaining proper defensible space helps protect your home from wildfire and storm damage by reducing fuel sources and preventing vegetation from encroaching on structures.
Adequate defensible space can also affect insurance coverage and real estate transactions, as many properties in fire hazard severity zones require inspections or compliance with fire safety standards. Northern Valley Tree Care helps homeowners and property owners meet defensible space requirements through professional land clearing and vegetation management, improving safety, compliance, and long-term property value.
Benefits of professional vegetation management include:
Reduced fire risk
Improved access and safety for firefighters
Insurance and inspection compliance
Healthier forests and landscapes
Greater peace of mind year-round
-
Yes. We offer emergency tree removal for fallen, storm-damaged, or hazardous trees that pose an immediate risk to people or property. Our team responds quickly to assess the situation and safely remove damaged trees or limbs while securing the affected area.
-
A tree risk assessment evaluates the health, stability, and potential failure risks of a tree. We look for structural weaknesses, failure-prone limbs, decay, and environmental stress factors. This helps homeowners make informed decisions about pruning, removal, or preventative care before problems occur.
-
Absolutely. All of our tree services include thorough cleanup. We handle brush and debris removal, wood chipping, and log and limb haul-away, leaving your property clean and safe. Our goal is to complete each job without creating additional work for the homeowner.
-
Land clearing focuses on removing multiple trees, brush, and overgrowth to open up larger areas of property. It is often used for fire risk reduction, property improvement, or defensible space preparation. Tree removal is more targeted, focusing on individual trees that are hazardous, unhealthy, or unwanted.
